Abstract

The existence of the human species is strongly marked by practices of breeding and hunting birds for food consumption. With the passing of the chronological scale, other forms of hunting involving this group of animals, such as breeding and sale, gained notoriety, which sparked energetic governmental measures, aiming at the protection of fauna in several countries, including Brazil. In this way, this article was prepared in order to characterize the development of different activities related to wild birds in an eastern region of Maranhão. From a qualitative investigation, twenty men living in the municipality of Aldeias Altas participated in the research and, through a semi-structured interview, the participants' oral reports were analyzed. In general, the results indicate the importance of actions aimed at scientific dissemination within the scope of Environmental Education, with the use of strategies that aim to sensitize individuals who sell, breed and consume, without the need for subsistence, wild birds that inhabit that location and play an ecological role in nature.
